If you’re approaching age 65 or have certain disabilities, signing up for Original Medicare (Part A and Part B) is an important step toward accessing healthcare. The process can seem daunting, but this guide will walk you through the necessary steps on the Social Security Administration (SSA) website.
What is Original Medicare?
Original Medicare consists of two parts:
**Part A**: Hospital insurance, covering inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, hospice, and some home health care.
**Part B**: Medical insurance, covering outpatient care, preventive services, and some doctor services.
When to Sign Up?
**Initial Enrollment Period**: Begins three months before you turn 65 and lasts for seven months (three months before, the month of, and three months after your 65th birthday).
**Special Enrollment Period**: Available if you delayed enrollment due to having other coverage (like employer insurance).
